At first I wasn't going to do this, but then I realized I don't have anything significant about me on this journal. On the one hand, this is good, as it means my fiction stands for itself. On the other, some people might be interested. You know, or not.
Sweeney fic almost done. It should go up tonight or tomorrow, if things go well.
1) How did you come about writing your first fanfiction? (What were the circumstances surrounding it?) If you don't write it, how did you come about reading your first fanfiction?
I finished FFX and was a wee bit obsessed with it. So I started working on a sort of epilogue/sequel type thing. (It's called Axis and it's back in the archives, somewhere, tagged FFX.) It's rather long and epic, and I stopped posting because I want to have it done before I put any more up, but I'm still working on it in my spare time. And then FFX-2 came out, and made my entire fic massively A.U., which is okay, although frankly, I think my version of what happened next makes more sense. (*cuts self off about FFX-2*) Anyway, that is how I started writing fanfic.
2) How long have you been writing (or reading) fanfiction?
Four years? Almost four. I've been reading it for a little longer than writing it, but not by much.
3)What fandoms do you write (or read) in usually?
In no particular order-
FFX
Sweeney Todd, lately
Gankutsuou
Phantom of the Opera (I should write more of this, actually, but like Axis, I've got another long, long project that's been languishing in incompletion.)
Harry Potter (read more than write in this one)
Ravenloft (yes, it is a fandom. Because
plaidavenger said so.)
4)Do you aspire to be an author of 'original' fiction?
I'm one of the thousands attempting to get published, at the moment. Keep your fingers crossed for me.
5)What type of fanfiction do you normally write (or read)? ie. 'hurt/comfort', 'slash', 'shipper stories', crossovers, 'Mary Sue', etc.
Honestly, the only thing I really care about is the writing quality. If you tell a good story, I'll stick with you. Otherwise I won't (which is why I almost never read Mary Sues, frankly). For example, BlitheringBard's Otherworld is an absolutely captivating exploration of Auron's ten years in Zanarkand, and is one of the reasons I got hooked on fanfic. Also see
susherevans's Lily and James series for some of the best Harry Potter fanfic I've ever seen.
6)Do you collaborate with other fic authors online or in person? If online is the case, what sort of communities are you involved in? ie. message boards, mailing lists, web sites, blogs, etc.
For the fics I post here, no. I do RP through IM a bit, but only with people I know in real life.
7)Do you post your fic publicly (online communities, archives, etc.) or do you keep it for yourself, or close personal friends to read only?
In between, I suppose. It all pretty much goes here, at this point, but I'll link to it from more public forums. I love response, constructive criticism and otherwise, but that's not the reason I do it.
8)Did you know what fanfiction was when you started writing (or reading) it?
Yeah, I had friends who talked about it.
9)Have you ever written fanfiction involving real people? ie. Movie stars, musicians, reality show cast members, etc.
No. That squicks me. (I've been looking for an excuse to use the word "squick" all morning...)
10)Are you a 'shipper'? Do you know what a 'shipper' is? And if so, who do you 'ship' and are your fics normally 'shipper' based?
Sort of. I, of course, have opinions about which relationships I find interesting/plausible, but I'm also not easily offended if people violate my shipping ideas in their work. See the comment above about quality. As for my writing...I tend to stick to what I perceive as canon, for the most part. But that's me.
17)Have you participated in (or won) any awards for your fanfiction in different online communities (ie. the 'spooky's' for the X-Files, or the 'Kerths' for Lois and Clark).
Never participated. Though if I finish the 100 fic challenge, I will feel pretty accomplished.
18)What are your feelings on the ambiguous legality of fanfiction? Is it OK as long as you post a disclaimer?
I think that fanfic is a lovely way to practice writing in a public, lower pressure forum. As long as the person is a) making no money from it and b) clearly stating that the charcters, etc. aren't theirs, I think it's a great way to build a community between fans, and to show appreciation for a given work. Basically, if no lying and no stealing is involved, it seems pretty harmless to me.
