“I don’t know,” she said. “I mean, I always thought that chocobos were supposed to be yellow.”
He grinned. “No, I mean, well, yes, initially, but it makes them very easy to spot. Normally not a problem, but with all the fiends on the highroad recently, I just thought I’d give evolution a little…push.”
“Clasko.” Rikku put her hands on her hips and cocked her head. “You do realize it’s bright green.”
“Well…” he looked a touch embarrassed. “Yes. But I’m trying to tone down the color a bit.”
She circled the bird, which was calmly eating grass, oblivious to its striking shift in hue. “Right…Clasko, have you been getting out a lot recently?”
He blinked slowly. “What do you mean?”
“You bred. A green. Chocobo.” She shook her head. “Very cute, of course, but they generally are. Perhaps you should take a break from chocobos for awhile.”
He looked like he was going to cry. “But…but I like them.”
“That’s un-de-ni-able.” Rikku emphasized every syllable, playing with the word. “But you need to get out more. Have some fun, you know?” She smiled at him.
He looked confused. “But…breeding chocobos is fun. It’s what I like to do.”
“Why don’t you take a ride in Pop’s airship with me? It’d loosen you up a bit! And maybe I could teach you to speak a bit of Al Bhed or something, okay?” She shot a sidelong glance at the bird. “Just to take your mind off…chocobos for a bit.
“Well…I suppose…”
“Great!” She didn’t wait for him to waffle. “Let’s go!” She grabbed the man and with surprising strength pulled him along as she bounced down the road. The bird looked up briefly, and then returned to eating with a small, pleased “chirrup.”
