There they all were, just as she’d left them. Kaylee had a sour feeling in her stomach as she boarded Serenity, and it was a strange feeling. The ship had always made her feel better, not worse. But now the Captain wasn’t here, it wasn’t right, and they’d all know it. They could all see, just as much as she could.
Badger’s men ushered her into the ship, her skirt making a soft rustling sound as she moved. It was time to take it off; for all that his words had hurt, the Captain was half right. Engine room was no place for anything as shiny as this. And there would be no more dancing. Not this evening, and probably not for a long while. It had been, until the end, a real nice party. Real nice. It shouldn’t have ended this way.
As she passed him, Simon leaned over and said, very quietly, “You look nice, Kaylee.”
And suddenly, life had possibilities. The Captain would find his way out, or they’d get him out, one way or the other. He and Inara would come back and, some day, they’d be on another nice planet. There’d be another party.
And she planned to find out whether the young doctor knew how to dance.
