15_minute_fic, word 129.
The word was scanner.
It was more than a little creepy, going into Sabine's room. It was dim, even when Rose flipped the lights, and the few pieces of hardware continued to hum quietly. It reminded her of life support. Of course, the elf wasn't there, though from the little Rose understood, the machines were keeping her alive.
She started looking for the journal. There was no earthly reason it should be here; even if Sabine had miraculously been the culprit, she wasn't so sloppy as to just leave it lying around. Still, she couldn't help being thorough. It wasn't as if Sabine was going to come barging in, complaining about her privacy, and Rose needed something to do. She hummed a little spell under her breath, keeping her eyesight sharp.
Unfortunately, she didn't bother with her hearing. So when someone said "Looking for something?", she nearly jumped out of her skin.
Rose whirled to see... Sabine. Not the clockwork simulacrum she'd been using, but Sabine, full and whole. She didn't look angry; to the contrary, Sabine looked downright amused.
After a moment of staring like an idiot, Rose said, "...but how?"
"Good to see you too, Rose." Sabine came in a little farther, the lights rising a little as she did. "If you're looking for something of mine, I can probably help."
"...no. I was looking to see if anyone was using your room as a hiding place. Someone stole something, and since you weren't here..."
"...you thought my room would be a decent hideout. Fair logic. Any success?"
"Not so far." Rose couldn't look away from Sabine. She knew what she was seeing... she just didn't quite believe it. "Are you - "
"I feel fine." Sabine put her hand on Rose's shoulder. Rose shivered, though it felt normal. Just a hand. "It's good to see you."
"You too," Rose said, weakly.
"Unfortunately," Sabine said, with a little sigh. "I'm not ready to make my big entrance just yet." Faster than Rose could anticipate, Sabine's hand flew up to the other woman's temple. A small pop followed, like a discharge of static electricity, and Rose fell to the floor. "Sweet dreams, Miss Rose," she said, quietly, and slipped out.
