Her own breathing was loud in her ears, even though she knew she was dreaming. It was that odd sensation where you realize that you must be asleep, but yet can’t force yourself awake. It was oppressive and claustrophobic.
“I’m not afraid of the darkness…” she whispered to herself, wrapping her arms around herself. It wasn’t that there was no light. The darkness was aggressive, actively filling up the room. At least, she assumed it was a room. She didn’t know for sure.
Good for you, my dear.
She shuddered. “Riku…”
A hand touched her shoulder and she suppressed a shriek. When he spoke, she could almost picture the smirk on his features, though the words themselves were gentle. “Calm down. I thought you said you weren’t afraid.” A pause. “You never were a very good liar.”
She turned and the darkness receded…just a hair. Enough for her to make him out, so familiar. Why was her heart beating so fast? She raised one hand to the edge of the swath of black across his eyes. “Sorry.”
He leaned in. “I don’t mind, my dear.” A gloved hand went to her cheek. “Now…what were you saying?”
She blinked. “I…I don’t remember.” She started to shake her head, but then realized that it would force him to withdraw his hand, and so she didn’t. “I think…I’m asleep.”
“Well,” she saw his smirk widen, “if it is a dream…at least it is a pleasant dream, no?”
“Ri-” His name was cut off as his lips met hers, and the darkness came crashing down over them. Or maybe she had just closed her eyes. It didn’t really matter, because he was warm, bittersweet like dark, raw chocolate. His other hand wrapped around her waist, and the kiss extended, the two of them standing together, locked together in the dark.
When they broke, her heart hadn’t slowed, though she wasn’t panicked anymore. Though the kiss ended, they stayed so close that touch could almost make up for the loss of sight. She licked her lips, and her tongue almost brushed his as well. Finally, she found her voice. “Riku…what are you doing here?”
She could feel the smirk this time, voice thick and smooth, like silk brushing her face. “Well, my dear… it’s a nightmare. And what is a nightmare without a bit of Darkness, hm?”
She repeated, her voice a little softer this time, “But I’m not afraid of the Darkness.”
The hand at her cheek left it, and he pulled off the blindfold. Glowing, molten gold eyes met hers, and she was lost. “You should be.”
