First off, thanks to all of you who continue to be so massively supportive of my Sweeney fics. I'm so glad that I've found a group of people as oddly twisted as I am. ^__^ And it's very nice to know people are actually reading what I've written. Yay. *celebratory dance*

Anyway. Meanwhile, I've gone off and joined another little challenge community, because...I couldn't help myself. [livejournal.com profile] 7_deadly_sins_ is, as the name would imply, a community with one prompt for each deadly sin. It's affiliated with [livejournal.com profile] fanfic100, but with only seven prompts, it shouldn't take up too much time. I hope. This what I'm telling myself, anyway.

A note on the fandom, as it's rather obscure; Gankutsuou is a fairly recent anime series based on Alexandre Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo, but set against the background of a futuristic, space-opera style society. It's gorgeous and odd and I'm a little bit obsessed. Just a wee bit. I went ahead and wrote fic one, but Sweeney is still going to be my main focus for awhile. These will be a bit more...as the mood strikes me.

Enough babbling. On to the obscure fanfiction!

Albert had slept late, once again. Franz sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. He should really stop being surprised, at this point. Albert had overslept every morning for the past year and a half. No matter what the occasion.

Franz stretched out on the couch, crossing his ankles in front of him and tilting his head backwards. Never mind that it was Eugènie’s birthday. Or that Albert had confessed he had yet to buy her a present, so they’d have to go shopping before they could meet her. Never mind that it usually took Albert hours to get ready when they were meeting Eugènie. No, he would sleep until he was good and ready to wake up. Dolt.

Albert’s mother came in and gave him an understanding smile. “Good morning, Franz.”

He looked up and stood, offering his hand, the picture of politeness. He knew she wouldn’t insist on the aristocratic formalities, but they were completely habit by now. At least for him. Albert…tended to forget such things.

“Good morning, Countess.” He kissed her hand lightly, and then added, a bit more informally, “Albert’s still sleeping. I apologize for simply lurking in your parlor this way, but…”

She laughed and shook her head, holding up a hand. Her jeweled earrings caught the morning sunlight, streaming in through the bay windows. “I understand how Albert can be. Every morning is a struggle. Would you like me to have the servants wake him?”

Franz considered for a moment, then sighed, one hand going to his hip. “Probably best. As much as he’s a terror to wake up, he really needs to get moving, or we’ll keep Mlle. Danglars waiting.”

The Countess de Morcerf gave him a radiant smile. “We can’t have that, now can we? If only Albert was half as considerate of his fiancée as you are, perhaps she would warm to him a little more.”

There was a momentary pang of guilt as Franz thought of Valentine, but he let it go. They both knew exactly what their marriage was to be. And he didn’t dislike her. But Albert and Eugènie had been friends almost as long as Franz had known them. The three of them had history that Valentine had never been a part of. And so today would be a day for them. Eugènie was turning sixteen. Hard to believe, but true.

The Countess smiled. “I’m sure he’ll be right down. In the meantime, please make yourself at home. You know you’re always welcome.”

He gave her a small half-bow before returning to his place on the couch. “Thank you, Countess. I appreciate that.” She smiled and passed out of the room. After a while, Franz grew restless and moved to look out the window, watching the city of Paris bustle beneath him. The sound of traffic was muffled, but ever present, and he could see, across the courtyard, carriages racing past.

“What’re you looking at?” Albert stood in the doorway, dressed, but groggy looking, as if it were hours earlier than it actually was.

Franz turned. “Nothing. Did you forget whose birthday it is? You need to get her a present still, don’t you?”

The younger boy blinked and ran his fingers through his messy brown hair. “Um…”

Rolling his eyes, Franz took Albert’s arm and half dragged him towards the door. “Come on, idiot. You can’t show up to your fiancée’s birthday without getting her something.” Smiling, he put Albert in the car and then hopped over to the driver’s seat. “And when you wake up, I’ve got some good news for you.”

“Hm? What is it?” Albert fought to swallow the yawn rising in his chest, sleep apparently unwilling to let him go so easily.

As he started the car, Franz flashed him a grin. “If I tell you now, you’ll just forget it. I’ll wait until you’ve woken, Sleeping Beauty.”

“Franz…” Albert half scowled as he rubbed the sleep from his eyes. “Come on, tell me.”

Franz laughed as he pulled out into the street. “All right, all right. You always were impatient, Albert.” The only response he got was a roll of the eyes, but at least his friend seemed more or less alert now. “I asked your father, and I got his permission to take you with me to Carnivale, on Luna. Just us two.”

Albert’s eyes got wide. “Franz…you mean it? He said yes? That's incredible news!”

Chuckling, Franz turned his eyes back to the road, secretly much more pleased than he let on. “Now that I’ve fully gained your attention…what are you getting for Eugènie?”
