Title: One More Morning
Fandom: Original. Look - something that isn't fanfic! Huzzah!
Rating: PG-13
He stretched, reaching for the gun first, then his clothing. The woman beside him shifted, her auburn hair splayed over the pillow, partially obscuring her face. He glanced down at her, something that was almost a smile twisting his lips. She had been good, this one. Very good indeed.
Padding into the bathroom, he didn’t bother turning on the light. He didn’t need it, and he didn’t want to wake her. The gun went on the counter, like always, as he started to get dressed. It wasn’t paranoia; it was practicality. Arthur Sloane intended to die in bed an old man. If you were going to do that, you had to take certain steps. Dick’s last lesson maybe. His jaw clenched. His partner hadn’t deserved that kind of death. It wasn’t his fault, anyway.
The woman shifted on the bed in the other room, murmuring something in her sleep. He glanced back in at her as he finished with his tie. The early morning light filtered in through the thin curtains and the heavy clouds above, diffused so it seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere all at once. The blinds barely cast their slanting shadows over her sleeping body, delicious-looking under the sheet.
Still, he had places to be. Sliding his gun into its holster, he retrieved his pack of cigarettes, lighting one with the cool flick of his Zippo, perfected after years of thoughtless smoking. The trail wasn’t getting any fresher, after all, and he needed to find the killer before Joe Clark found him. Though dying at his ex-partner’s hand would have been tragically poetic, it conflicted with his prior plan of dying in bed. Sloane preferred boredom to tragedy anyway. Better for your health.
He thought about picking up the empty bottle of Jack Daniel’s, but then left it lie there, next to the redhead. A memento for her. He flipped the fedora on to his head and quietly slipped to the door. He was glad she was a heavy sleeper. It was always embarrassing when they woke up and he couldn’t remember their names.
