My laptop is still dead, but I finally got two of the three requested drabbles completed. Good old pen and paper. Scandalous. Anyway, I made it home, so I should be back on a more normal schedule before too very long. Perhaps.

Title: Lost for Words
Fandom: Hamlet
Rating: G
Characters: Hamlet, Laertes, Ophelia
Requested by: [livejournal.com profile] amleto

Laertes was one of those awkward friends, shoved upon one as a way for parents to cement alliances; perhaps a dry run for the discomfort of an arranged marriage. The young boys didn’t hate one another. It was simply that swordplay was the only thing they had in common. By mutual, unspoken consent, they decided to make the best they could of one another’s company, making virtue of necessity. They boys stuck to games they agreed on, and spoke their minds very little, and everyone was content, if not happy.

He hadn’t known his arranged playmate was a brother in anything more than an academic way, the way he knew that Venice was full of canals. So when he met her one day, in the library of all places, he could barely believe that the fiery brown eyes were Laertes’ duplicates, when coupled with the lovely form of a young woman who happened to be holding one of his favorite volumes of poetry. And though she had her brother’s eyes, her smile was all her own; it was the smile that would always make him think of the hearty yet intricate scent of rosemary. With Ophelia, though he sometimes struggled for words, the prince never fumbled for common ground.

Title: Oathkeepers
Fandom: FFX
Rating: G
Characters: Auron, Kimahri, Braska, Jecht
Requested by: [livejournal.com profile] auronlu

Lord Braska always needed to save people. It was, perhaps, the defining aspect of his personality. Auron almost smiled bitterly at the thought. He was loathe to think that he was as much of a castaway as Jecht, but dislike of a fact didn’t make it any less true. So he shouldn’t have been surprised when, in the middle of the bitter snows of Gagazett, the summoner was at it again.

Blue fur rustled in the wind, the only movement from the Ronso as he stood, eyes down, expression utterly unreadable.

“But there must be some reason you left.” Auron had heard Lord Braska use a similar tone with his daughter in Bevelle. “You look like a fine warrior to me, and…”

The gruff voice that cut Braska off didn’t seem to be coming from the Ronso at all, it was so much a part of the mountainside. “Kimahri left. Not go back.” Immovable.

Jecht grunted; he was not dressed for the cold, and was growing impatient. Perhaps moreso than usual. “Look, Braska. Not our problem. Let’s getting moving already.”

Braska didn’t bother looking at the shivering blitzer. “Because you do not wish to go back?”

For a moment, nothing moved but the wind. Then, slowly, the Ronso indicated the stump of a horn, obviously cut off. Startled, Auron met the Ronso’s eyes, half accidentally. For just one wordless moment, the two warriors perfectly understood one another, their solitudes running in parallel tracks. And Auron knew that neither of them would ever have the words to make Braska understand.

Quietly, Auron said without looking away from the Ronso, “Come, Lord Braska. Kimahri will surely find his own way home.” And before he turned away, Auron thought privately that if ever he could not fulfill a promise alone, Kimahri would be one to see it to the end.

Oh, wonderful!

Now that is a fine bit of characterization. Braska, ever the healer; Jecht, impatient as always; and Auron and Kimahri communicating without words, right from their first chance meeting. You summed up so much about Kimahri in just that brief exchange!

I love filling-in-the-gaps fanfic, I really do. Thanks very much. :)
