dolevalan: (Kitathas)

So last Friday, I sat down to make a cutscene for [livejournal.com profile] rougen, and instead, this popped out. Whoops. There may be anywhere between 1-3 more of these coming at some point, though I haven't decided just yet. They are in the order of the prompts, which means they aren't in chronological order at all. The prompts are all from [livejournal.com profile] 1sentence, sets Alpha and Beta, respectively.

Disclaimer: Meg, Kitathas, and Nen are [livejournal.com profile] rougen's - just borrowed for a bit. Riku is Square's, via [livejournal.com profile] rougen as well.
Rating: R for mild sex and some violence...I think. I hate ratings.

Set Alpha

1) She lay in bed, drifting off, the warm and rich sound of his steady, quiet voice wrapping around her as surely and comfortingly as his arms.

2) The problem, she had discovered, with his taste was that every time it rained, the smell made her weak in the knees.

3) She half believed that she could sink through the bed into the floor below, the soft covers giving way as surely as her tense muscles had under his deft fingers.

4) She saw the sword piercing his chest, but it felt like she was the one whose chest had been ripped open.

5) Peeling potatoes, the warm smell of earth distracted her long enough that she nicked her finger; then it smelled of earth and blood.

6) The pervasive Chicago drizzle made a faint halo around his fedora, and worried as she was for Arthur, she couldn’t help but smile at how it looked tilted over his leaf-shaped ears.

7) The cake batter was flavored with melted chocolate, tears, and the crushing regret that he’d never be around to taste it.

8) She made him laugh, and promptly decided she’d never need to do anything more impressive for the rest of her life.

9) It was a hard phone call to make, as she’d known it would be; it would have been harder if she’d known that he was lying in bed beside Meg as they talked.

10) She had never had the stereotypical fascination for all things elvish, but she had to admit his delicately molded leaf-shaped ears were, like the rest of his features, perfect.

11) Though she had once told him not to, she didn’t really mind him calling her Arwenamin; it made every occasion on which her name fell from his lips a small treasure.

12) It was a silly, simple pleasure, but she couldn’t help but feel a little stronger every time his slender, strong fingers brushed her cheek.

13) As she watched him weep over the body of the woman he loved, she couldn’t help but feel that if one of the three of them had to die, it should not have had to have been by his hand.

14) She would never admit it for fear of hurting him, but the night he let himself cross the boundary of caution with her was the best sex they ever had: not just because of the pain and intensity, but because she got to see a glimpse of him he’d usually try to hide.

15) The night after Arthur tried to commit suicide, the feel of someone holding her without trying to get something for themselves was enough to make her fall for him, even if she didn’t realize it for weeks afterwards.

16) She could only believe in her own strength because she trusted him; everything about him made her feel weak, even if the sensation wasn’t entirely unpleasant.

17) She found it easier to cry with him than for him, and part of missing him was missing the ability to shed tears without biting them back.

18) It always astonished her, how fast the wind could move – how fast a falcon could fly away.

19) A playful wind, or a powerful one… she knew now it could be both at once, if never quite carefree.

20) She read the letter over and over again, but as many times as he told her to fly, she knew she didn’t truly wish to be free.

21) Every now and then she tried to imagine the crushing weight of a lifetime made of thousands upon thousands of days…weeks…months...and she felt very small indeed.

22) She tried to tell herself that she wouldn’t have hated Nen as much, if she had loved Kitathas in return, and almost succeeded in convincing herself until the jealously cut her argument out from under her.

23) She pressed her hands against his back, hard enough to bruise, and squeezed her eyes shut, trying to pretend that somehow, someday, it would all work itself out.

24) Sipping the chamomile tea, she tried to calm herself down, feeling more than seeing him at her side, the sweet herbal flavor souring on her tongue.

25) It was a certain type of love, that looked for no return of itself, that would walk to the end of the earth for someone whose one wish was another’s smile.

26) When she said forever, she knew it meant something different than when he said it; but in all honesty, “until the end of my days” has a different ring to it when you’re several millennia older.

27) When she was alone, she’d run her thumb over the arrowhead, but never hard enough to mix her blood with his.

28) As she sat there, idly stroking her fingers through his hair and humming a lullaby, she watched him sleep, knowing he’d be angry when he awoke, but savoring the moment regardless.

29) She had never heard him sing, that she could recall, but the times were frequent when his rich voice would take on a melody of its own, weaving through the lyrical elvish with the ease of a bird sailing through clear skies.

30) The stars were coming out, one by one, as she sat on the lakeside cliff and wished he were there to see them too.

31) She knew he had promised to take her to parts of his world, but the small tastes she had sampled were enough to last her easily a lifetime.

32) It wasn’t that she didn’t understand; it was that no one had told her.

33) The worst fear wasn’t that she would be alone; the worst fear was that she had made his life worse than it would have been if he hadn’t met her.

34) It was too bad, really, that the halls were so isolated from the outside world, as she always regretted she never got to lie in his arms while listening to a thunderstorm.

35) Though he had warned her in advance that he was bound to another, she forgot to allow for her capacity to get into binds without outside help.

36) She bought him a large, silly beach hat, but never had the chance to give it to him.

37) He once said to Meg that he wasn’t good at video games, but she privately found it hard to imagine anything he would have trouble mastering if he chose, and suspected he was just humoring Meg.

38) Four feathers, a dirk, an arrow, and a broken heart were left in his wake.

39) She never knew the value of her smile until he asked what he could do to make it reappear.

40) As bad as she felt about what happened with Nicolas, she could never decide whether it was better or worse that he was able to forgive her so quickly and easily for it.

41) “Leaving nothing undone” did not and could not mean simply leaving her a letter; whether or not they wanted it, things ended in their own way.

42) Every time she lay on the hillside watching clouds go by, she remembered the time he was there at her side, watching them as well, and couldn’t help but wonder what it was that he saw.

43) A clear sky with one lone falcon circling overhead could still make her catch her breath and stare.

44) His eyes were the most heavenly colors, even if they were windows with the curtains drawn.

45) Even when she knew she should be, she had never succeeded in being truly afraid of him, no matter how foreign or cold his looks could be.

46) She never heard him call her sunlight dancing along a dark path.

47) The first time she saw Nen without her hood, she couldn’t think “This is the woman he loves;” all she could think was “Her hair looks like moonlight.”

48) Though they joked about going to the beach, she knew it would never happen, and she envied Arthur and Meg their irresponsibility.

49) She had never liked truly long hair on men, but her fingers ached to run through the long ebony strands tipped in quicksilver one more time.

50) It didn’t explode between them; it slowly imploded, like a dying star.

Set Beta

1) He walked through the drizzle and the shadows, cigarette hanging from his mouth and thinking of her.

2) As he spun her uncertainly through the steps of the waltz, he caught a glimpse of Kitathas and Amy and couldn’t help wishing the band would switch back to swing music.

3) He would never go back and change anything, but he never stops wishing for a happy ending for her, even if they can’t share it.

4) As he watched her sleep in his arms, he was once again amazed to find her there, as if she were an especially beautiful dream to fade on waking.

5) He told her not to worry about him…but he was secretly glad she did.

6) Though he never would have bought it for himself, the puppy she gave him for Christmas brought out the kid in him, to his own surprise and occasional amusement.

7) He tells himself love is never a waste...but he only believes it when he sees her face.

8) His relationship with Amy was whiskey and rum – good side by side, but not as mixers; his relationship with her was vodka and vermouth – utterly meant to be.

9) He wasn’t quite sure when his relationship with her had started a war for survival, but he still thought it was worth it, despite everything.

10) He wasn’t the marrying type, as the last wedding he’d even been to was Joe’s; even if he were, he knew he’d never marry now.

11) He’d been thinking about her birthday for weeks: still no success.

12) Though they had her blessing, he still sometimes wondered how Amy could really feel about them, given all the three of them had been through.

13) Without hesitation, he would swear that she was the most marvelous woman he’d ever met in every conceivable way; of course, he was understandably a little biased.

14) Her touch set him aflame unlike anyone he could remember, and he adored the way she drove him crazy.

15) From the first breath he drew after being pulled out of the river, he could feel her at his side, even if he couldn’t show how glad he was.

16) No matter how many glasses they threw against the wall, it wouldn’t change anything…especially the way they felt about each other.

17) He didn’t believe in magic until the day she gave him the power to bend reality; then things got very interesting indeed.

18) Perhaps he should get her a balloon bouquet for her birthday; no, that would be stupid.

19) Dinner on the balcony had been one of his better ideas, even if it hadn’t completely worked.

20) He was glad she had so many people who cared about her, but sometimes he was sure that her characters were the bane of his existence.

21) She might not realize it, but he was the most talkative with her he’d ever been with any woman he was involved with romantically; so much for the strong, silent type.

22) Her little quirks were part of why he loved her, though he sometimes wondered just how long a person could spend in the shower.

23) They had started out with questions – that, and lots of sexual tension.

24) Though the darkness helped, he was fairly sure they could have managed to have blazing rows completely on their own steam.

25) Every now and then, he got the sinking feeling that if he were less selfish, he would have quit a long time ago, while they were both ahead.

26) He wasn’t one for leaps of faith, but there were moments when he could believe that it would all come right in the end.

27) Jokes and kisses were the only two things he knew how to do with her anymore…and despite his exterior, neither were his most natural element.

28) He had come a long way since that first fencing lesson with Riku…but he still knew he’d be in bad, bad trouble if he was down to a swordfight with anyone from outside his setting.

29) Hopefully she wasn’t getting sick of jewelry; but then, he hadn’t gotten sick of picking it out for her.

30) Everything could be easier if he stopped caring about justice, and only cared about her.

31) A smirk looked eerily at home on his face, though he had seldom turned it on her.

32) There is no greater sorrow, in his mind, than being unable to keep her from hurting.

33) He couldn’t decide whether he was stupid or just badly informed, but was leery of asking for her opinion on the subject.

34) Amy had threatened a karaoke night, and though he wasn’t tone deaf, living in the same hall with Tahar made him leery of his own attempts to woo via music.

35) Biting sarcasm was their mutual weapon of choice: that and veiled commentary.

36) He looked out the window of his dingy apartment at the Chicago skyline and he knew that even if he hated it, this was where he belonged…even if it was a world she had no part of.

37) He liked talking to the dog she gave him – at least it was better than talking to himself.

38) No matter how many times they were separated, or left one another, he’d come to believe that they’d always find a way back, somehow or other.

39) It took a big man to share his private stash of bourbon.

40) He was used to being a loner, through and through, and he couldn’t understand why he needed her so damn much.

41) He’d said he’d take her to his story, but he realized when he went back: a discarded story is really nowhere at all.

42) He wished he could tell her that no matter how neutral his face got, it never meant his heart was doing the same.

43) Every time he thought he had learned every nuance and quirk, she managed to take him completely off his guard.

44) He could hold her so close, but see that she was a million miles away.

45) Despite all the magic and power thrown around, he couldn’t help but feel he’d love her anyway, just the two of them as normal people, doing normal things.

46) He’d never seen the ocean before, and the way the horizon stretched away was almost as breathtaking as the feel of her skin underwater.

47) No matter what anyone said, he was no knight errant; then again, she wasn’t quite a damsel in distress either.

48) He couldn’t remember a time he didn’t have something to be ashamed of, but he could remember a time when there was nothing to loose.

49) Every kiss was a little victory; every moment they were together was cheating the odds.

50) He would have to loose her one day, he knew; but he wouldn’t let it be because he couldn’t fight hard enough.
