Author's Note: Short. Late. I want to fix it, and perhaps will later. But this is the unpolished, only-worked-on-for-15-minutes version.
It had exploded. She was fairly certain that explosions were not a good sign. For a long moment, she just stared at the pile of…rubble, really, glass and chemicals and expensive apparatus all jumbled in a useless, mangled heap. A bell was ringing, far away. No, that wasn’t right. It was just her ears, recovering from the explosion. That was it.
Stella groaned, inwardly, blinking away the shock as she lifted the goggles to better survey the damage. It was going to take ages to reconstruct the lab. And Rolf…the Doctor…he was going to be utterly aghast at the mess she’d made. She shouldn’t have been able to make such a mess with a simple experiment…what could she have been thinking?
As she began to gather the debris, she knew, of course, what it was that had distracted her so badly. She had been recording all her symptoms privately for months now, and it was a full moon. There was no reason, that she could see, why the moon’s cycles should effect her withdrawl, but science didn’t ask for her to supply a reason. Simply observations. So she would continue to observe, and record. And to clean up before the Doctor returned.
After all, between mopping the floor and re-labeling half his collection, she would have to come up with an excuse she could actually give him for the catastrophe. And most of all, she would have to prove that she was fit to be even an assistant, much less a partner. This was unacceptable, and she knew it.
It was not, she reflected, the best way to begin a week.
