Well, I've been fairly absent from this corner of the internet for awhile, due to a combination of factors. The most pertinent of which is...I'm seriously working on a novel, which is exciting, but seriously cuts into fanfic time. However, I haven't utterly abandoned it, as I'm working on a Sweeney fic inspired by my reading of the Bond play, and my friend
seeleschrift has started me thinking about a seriously epic fic in my newest fandom, Firefly (It's crack. Lovely, lovely crack). So, to summarize, I don't know what my posting schedule will be like any time soon. But I will probably be looking for proofreaders/Betas in several months for chunks of the novel, if any of you will be interested (it's a sci-fi...space opera...thing. Which I will post about in more detail sometime later).
Meanwhile, here's a 15 minute fic of a Christmas-y nature.
Title: If Only In My Dreams
Fandom: Firefly
Rating: G
It was snowing. There were worlds where it didn’t, he knew; worlds where snow was just a forgotten dream of Earth-that-was. But here on the core, it was the job of many scientists and engineers to ensure that he could glance out his window at the fat flakes twirling down towards the streets miles below. Simon Tam took a small sip of red wine before turning back to the desk he’d set up by the fireplace. He could hear the echo of recorded Christmas carols from the apartment above. But his attention was all for the stack of open letters in front of him as he settled in the plush, roomy chair.
He picked up the pen and legal pad and reviewed what he’d done. Not fast enough. Not nearly. He didn’t realize he was absently but almost frantically humming along with “The Carol of the Bells” as his mind raced across his sister’s words. Exhaling, he endeavored to see them like a patient. A broken thing that needed fixing. River wouldn’t give him something he couldn’t handle. She had faith in him. She was depending on him.
A chirrup in the next room shattered his focus. It had to be his father. Simon glanced at the clock, shocked to find it late enough for his parents to be home from their party. He cursed very softly under his breath, though there was no one to hear him, as he looked back at the letters. The noise has broken the concentration he had spent hours building, smashing it like a child carelessly stepping on a glass tree ornament.
He wouldn’t answer the phone. His father wouldn’t want him to. It was very neat, just like everything in his life. Everything but these letters from his sister.
He could almost reach her. Just open the letters a crack farther… and their fingers would brush through the page. He could feel it. And River was the only person he could think of he wanted to spend his Christmas Eve with.
He hoped she could see the snow.

Date: 2006-12-29 05:42 pm (UTC)Mine's coming along fairly well. I'm currently writing another chapter from scratch that will involve even more research on Victorian London, but I think I'll survive (it wasn't a planned chapter, but it's necessary now).

That was just a beautiful passage and it makes me feel for Simon. He was almost there, understanding is just at the edges of his fingertips...to have it dashed away.
A wonderful ficlet. I'm very, very> glad I clicked.
