A bit of a delayed 15 min fic offering.
Title: That Good Night
Fandom: Original
Rating: PG
He had expected it to go with a bang, when it went. Feel of fire, smell of sulfur, all that. But it had only been a breath, separating the moment from the one before it. There was a floating, disconnected sense of placelessness, and then he was aware of being in a small room. It looked like a professor’s office, or a private study, filled with books.
“Well, Mr. Henderson, here we are.” The man who spoke was standing by the fireplace, holding a glass of wine. “It would seem, at last, our journey has found a resting place.”
“Just like that? I wasn’t even doing anything. Just…”
Quietly, the man said, “Just stopping to enjoy the moment. Thinking how nice it might be if it never ended, idly.” He took a sip. “Silly man. What was it, that finally undid you?”
Matt stared into the dead ashes of the fireplace, knowing it was over and not feeling a need to answer.
“Drugs, was it? A meal? A woman? You’ve gone through enough of them.”
When Matt continued not to answer, the man moved a little closer.
“Oh, come, after all the time we’ve spent together, I had begun to think we were friends. I can’t have offended you, can I? Was it a rose? He was always so proud of the silly things.” More silence. The man laughed and finished the glass. “Oh come, your answer won’t affect your fate. The bet is done, after all.”
Matt spoke quietly, in German, as he had when they’d first met. “I thought you weren’t coming anymore, my friend.”
The man leaned in, close enough for Matt to smell the warm scent of chocolate and wood smoke. He spoke in German as well now. “I always honor my promises, even if I do not always tell the truth. Come. What was it?”
Matt’s lips twisted into a small, bitter smile. “I had finally stopped missing you.”
He would have preferred the explosion.
Author's note: While not fanfic, this piece was inspired loosely by Goethe's take on the Faust legend.
