“I can look at her for ya, if you’re thinkin’ she needs looking at.” Simon nearly jumped; he hadn’t heard her approach at all.

“No, it isn’t…” He sighed. “It’s nothing important. Really.”

“Didn’t ask if it was important, I asked if you wanted me to look.” Kaylee jumped, easily, to perch on the half wall at the foot of his bunk. “She looks like a shiny piece of work, is all.”

“She… it is – was – a music box. I didn’t bring much from home, but…” Unsure where he’d been going with the sentence, Simon abandoned it. “Weren’t you helping the Sheppard with dinner?”

“Chased me off,” she grinned. “I think he’s doin’ something fancy, and I don’t know cream from carrots, push comes to shove. Here,” she held out her hand.

He didn’t know why he was hesitating. This was Kaylee. He knew she wouldn’t break it, or break it any more, rather, since it was already in a state of disrepair. After a moment, he handed it to her, gently.

She took it like she would cradle someone else’s child, seemingly unhurt by the hesitation if she noticed it. “Poor little lady. Lost a part or two along the way.” She flipped it over, gently prying off the back. “Nothing you can’t do without, though, all’s said and done.”

Simon was no longer certain whether she was addressing him or the device. So he just sat and watched. Her fingers cleverly playing over the device reminded him of the woman he used to take piano lessons from, as a boy, creating beauty out of the smallest strokes of the keys. Of course, Miss Simms hadn’t had dirt crusted under short nails, or a smudge of grease on her nose, but she didn’t smile quite as much either. Simon considered it something of an even trade.

“There,” Kaylee said, about five minutes later, looking up with a smile. “All right as rain again. I’ll think she’ll sing for you now, if you wanna give her a try.” She handed the music box back to him.

“Thank you. I…” But before he could finish, he had almost absently hit the start button. The device lit up, a soft glowing green, and started to play, softly, a Chopin etude. He looked down at it in semi-wonder. It had been a long while since he had heard music, proper music, and he didn’t know how much he’d missed it until this very moment.

When he looked up, Kaylee was grinning from end to ear. “You’re welcome.” And with that, she hopped down and left again before he recovered his faculties sufficiently to say more.
