She stamped the paper hard, as if it was the only outlet for everything in her life that frustrated her. It must, he imagined, be a life full of frustration, despite her fine clothes and her calm, professional smile. “I’m going to recommend you for a full evaluation, sir, given the circumstances. If you go down the hall to the second window on your left, the office will issue you an appointment, fully paid for, of course.”
“Recommend, hm?”
“Strongly recommend.” She looked up at him. Her eyes were wide and green and gave nothing away.
“Yes, I imagine you will.” He sighed and leaned back in the chair. “I’m not crazy, of course, but I imagine everyone says that.”
“They do, yes,” she said, looking back down at the paperwork. “And you’ve been under a great deal of strain. What with your marriage, and your son –”
“Don’t,” he said, calm but suddenly icy, “mention my son.”
“I can see how very well-adjusted you are.”
Nicolas Willoughby leaned forward. “I’ll tell you a secret, dear lady. The Company isn’t out to get everyone. That would be simple. It’s out to keep most of them safe. It’s just the ones that slip the leash. Those are the ones you have to watch.”
She almost smirked, and leaned forward as well. “Now, I will tell you a secret, Lord Willoughby. We are watching. Constantly.” She dropped her voice. “You wouldn’t want to wind up another disappointment to your father, like your sister did, now would you?”
He spent a month in a cell too small to sit down in, in the dark. When he emerged, her hand still wasn’t entirely reconstructed.
