When she spoke to him, the tone was light, fragile. As if too harsh a wind could whip it away entirely. She was singing now, leaning absently out the window. She might fall. He should go in, draw her away. But still, still. It was a shame to ruin her little tune.

And as he watched her, as he had watched her a thousand times, something clicked into place, quietly, within him. Her mother. She had her mother’s voice. He closed his eyes and he was standing in Fleet Street, listening to a lullaby drift down from above, a golden rain to rival…

He got up and straightened himself. He was not in Fleet Street, he was in Tierney’s Lane. And master of all who lived there.
