Juliyanna brushed her dark hair back out of her face as she leaned out her window. She could just hear the two men speaking in low voices just outside her window.

“I don’t think he stands a chance,” said one. “The King’s power base is too strong.”

Juliyanna laughed to herself at how foolish the man was. He underestimated her father, and her aunt Morgana, and most importantly Juliyanna herself. No one knew how important the beautiful young granddaughter of the king would prove herself. Not yet.

“But if he should force Arthur’s hand? He’s not as young as he used to be, and he’s no other children. He might -”

“Might what? Leave the kingdom in the hands of a bastard?”

Juliyanna resisted the urge to shout down at them a curse like her aunt Morgana had taught her, or to go and challenge them to a duel. Not that they’d accept from a young girl, but she knew she could best them if given the chance. But she thought instead of her father’s plans and was silent. He’d taught her the value of spying. And he’d want to know what they had to say.

“I don’t know. He’s a sneaky little weasel, is Mordred. Always planning, he is. I don’t like it.”

“Keep an eye on him. Maybe we’ll catch something. Besides, I know there’s a man or two spying in his ranks.”

Juliyanna leaned far out of the window and batted her eyes at the knights far below. “Good sirs!” They looked up. “Excuse me, sirs, but I’ve put something up on a high shelf, and now I can’t reach it! Could one of you please help me?” She knew they would be bound, chivalrous fools that they were, to help. And their walk up the stairs would give her time to prepare.

They would be devoted to her, she would see to that, and she’d have the names of the spies. She was the only one who could ensure her family’s success, and see the foolish, smug idiot of a grandfather well and deposed. Juliyanna caught a quick reflection in the dim glass, and used a spark of magic to make her raven hair shine, her green eyes glint brightly.

Her father would be so pleased.
