Johanna could see the Tower, from her window at home. She used to find it scary, a place where bad people were locked away. Her father put them there, sometimes, before they were to be hanged or transported. She would draw the heavy curtains and shiver a small, secretly thrilled shiver and that would be that.

Now, when she could manage sleep in the swirling cacophony of the asylum, she dreamed she was there. Two little boys took her hands, one each. They smiled at her. They were kind, sweet boys. Sweet, sweet boys, and sometimes the smaller one would sing.

At first, they were the only ones. The three of them would sing and play. They were free to come and go as they pleased, flitting between the dark stones and slipping over wet rock as they ran. But it never hurt to fall, and the boys would help her up. She’d stay with them until she woke, smiling and warmed in the dank squalor of her cell.

One night, they led her down. Down stairs, down passages, down deep, deep below the earth. She didn’t know there was so much, under the Tower. It seemed like days, they went down, but the boys smiled. Johanna thought their smiles were sad.

A kind man was there. He was dressed well, royally, and welcomed her. The boys’ uncle, and a smiling man he was. He kissed her cheeks, welcomed her, and sat her down.

“Lady,” he said, softly, “blood will betray.”

“I know it,” she said, quietly, “I know it.”

He blessed her, and let her go, his smile the saddest yet. And the boys led her back up to the light. The youngest hugged her, before she woke. Her smile was matched with two tears on her cheek, when she did. One for each little prince.

Oh, I love this. Eerie and quiet and beautiful.
