Stella looked up at her mother squarely. “I don’t know.”

“You don’t know.”

“No,” Stella repeated, calmly, “I don’t.”

“All of my guns have been taken apart, meticulously, and you’ve not the faintest idea who or how?”

“I chose not to speculate without certainty.”

Anya nearly shouted, but bit her tongue, and finally said, “Wait until your father gets home, young lady.”

Stella nodded. Even at seven, she was aware of exactly how far her mother could be pushed.

--

Stella smiled, pleasant but not warm. “Yes, thank you.”

The apothecary nodded, and fetched her all the items she’d requested. “And how is doctor von Rabe, Miss Hawdon?”

“He’s quite well. He’s working on a new project.”

“Nothing too devious, I hope,” the man chuckled. He deposited the items in the basket she’d set on the counter.

“Oh, never. Has business been good?”

He shrugged. “Ah, good enough, good enough. This time of year, people look for little cure-alls for colds, flu. I’m sure you know.”

“Indeed.” She smiled a bit. “I do trust you’ll let the doctor know, should something come up that needs more attention?”

“Without a doubt, Miss Hawdon. You keep well, now.”

“And you.” She paid, and left, the picture of friendly professionalism.

--

“Are you quite done pouting, then?”

Frederick scowled. “Joke all you like. They still gave a very flimsy excuse for being here.”

“I am absolutely touched at how you picture my family life.”

He took Stella’s hand. “Stella. In all seriousness.”

She took his other hand. “In all seriousness. There is nothing to worry about. My family is unconventional, but they are, at least, loyal to one another.”

Though he tried to relax, his shoulders remained tight. “You’ll bet your life on that?”

“Oh, honestly.” She released his hands. “Do stop being so melodramatic, please.”

“I just want you safe. Is that something worth so much derision?” He moved to close the space between them. “You know I care about you.”

Stella’s voice softened. “I thought we agreed. We’ll wait until the job is done.”

“All business,” Frederick murmured, then kissed her.

She closed her eyes and returned it, but broke it a moment later. “You know how I feel. And I’ll be cautious.” A small smile, pleasant if not… “It won’t be too long, hm?”

He sighed. “Not too long,” he echoed. “We should get back to camp, I guess. You want me to cook tonight?”

She laughed, softly. “I can think of nothing I’d like more.”
