rougen ("it seemed to be going so well"). A contemporary AU of some characters who are themselves AU versions of other characters. Yay self-indulgence.
"Well. It could have gone... worse."
"How?" Clara leaned back in the chair, one arm draped carelessly over the side, holding a half-empty glass of Merlot.
Yuri ruffled his hair carelessly, then pulled off his tie. "Well. My uncle could have shot someone. He looked like he wanted to."
"I get the feeling he always looks like that." She smiled wearily at him. "Lucky us. We get to find out."
"I get to find out," he corrected her, flopping on the couch. "You, as my partner, have the luxury of skipping out on them if you want."
"Ah well." She sipped her wine. "Sadly, I have to get your back regardless, so I'll steel myself."
He pinched the bridge of his nose. "Well." He chuckled. "Sometimes I think I was better off when I was the nameless vagabond wonder."
Clara grinned a bit wickedly. "Ah, and miss out on both parents, your father's wife, your half sister, your uncle, his children, both of their mothers, and one of the mothers' other son and his father? What fun would that be?"
"Well, it's certainly a Hallmark movie in the making," Yuri conceded. "Now all we need is a scrappy dog and a grandparent with cancer."
"Hey now. One of them might. You don't know."
"I do, actually." He grinned. "I googled them. Two are dead, and two will never die, from all apparent signs. Should have invited them too." He rubbed his temples lightly with one hand. "Well. At least no one seemed to be allergic to anything."
Clara laughed. "That you know of. Unless you googled their allergies." She got up and moved to pour him a gin. "You going to make it in to work, after that whirlwind?"
"Oh, and miss another fun filled day of going through people's bank statements and lingering outside of office buildings? Wouldn't dream of it."
She came over to sit by his feet, handing him his glass. "Well. Joking aside, I think you did well, considering. And frankly, they all seemed to like you. It was each other they found awkward."
"Maybe I should have figured inviting all of them at once wasn't a recipe for success. Thanks," as he took the gin. "But they all came."
"They all came," she confirmed. "And none of them refused to see you again. For good or ill."
He sighed. "Do you think it was stupid?"
"No," quieter. "Not stupid. You know I can understand you wanting to have a family." She tilts her head. "But I hope you didn't get more than you bargained for."
"Well. Can't put the genie back in the bottle now, so it's done." He smiled. "Thanks. For not skipping out on me."
"Too entertaining to miss," she said, with a wicked little smile.
He hit her with a pillow. "I wouldn't put it past you to make trouble on purpose, Slim."
"Don't need to. Finds you without my help." She tucked her feet up on the couch. "But I'm always willing to be an audience member." He shook his head with a lopsided grin, ruffled her hair and leaned back on the couch. They slipped into an easy silence, sipping their drinks and savoring the quiet that had fallen.
