"Well."
"Well." Arthur looked his brother up and down and wondered when Danny had done all that growing up. He looked trim, boyish only in his good looks. In his freshly pressed uniform, Daniel Sloane was the image of every American boy heading off to war for God and country. "You look damn impresive."
Danny smiled, a little sheepishly. "It's just a standard air force dress uniform. Hundreds of them around the country, Art."
"Yeah, but most of them aren't filled with lunkheads like my kid brother." He circled Dan once, mock critically. "Monkey suit compensates for anything."
Danny rolled his eyes. "I'm sure that's it. Not that I know how to fly a plane or anything."
"Nah. You've got 'em all fooled. Always could bluff your way into anything." Arthur's eyes softened just a bit, cocky smile still in place as he came back to face Danny. "But guess they'll figure that out soon enough."
"Oh, doubtless." Danny offered Arthur his hand. "Tell you what. I bet I can gun down more japs than you book crooked wops, by the time I get back."
Arthur laughed. "You're on, little boy." His grip was just a little too tight.
Danny's voice dropped, and he didn't let his brother's hand go. "I'm sorry. About your hip."
Arthur's smile strained a bit, but he let Danny go with another short squeeze. "Don't worry about it, kid. Who wants to be a war hero, anyway? Every girl loves a hero, but every girl needs to be loved in the meantime, you know."
"Right." Danny sighed. "Speaking of... keep an eye on Kitty for me? But not too close an eye, right? I do want to marry the girl one day, you know."
"There's enough broads in Chicago for me without having to poach my kid brother's girl, Danny." He shook his head, but said, "I'll keep an eye out."
"Thanks." He was quiet a moment, then Danny said, "I wish you were coming with me, Art."
"Nah. I'd cramp your style. Besides, you'll be back before you can turn around, telling unbelievably exaggerated stories and being fussed over by Ma."
"Sure." Danny smiled, but just for a moment, looked like a boy again. "Stay safe, okay?"
"Yeah, Dan. You too."
Arthur looked out the window, watching as his brother emerged onto the sidewalk. Danny looked around, but not up, as if he were taking in and storing the image of the street for later. Then he put his hat on, and strode off confidently toward the station, duffel slung over his shoulder. Arthur couldn't help feeling jealous, worried and proud all at once as he traced Danny's progress down the street. He was a fine looking kid, no doubt about it. And Danny would just have to make their country proud, for both of them. Arthur had reports to file.
