rougen, "Everyone's right and no one is sorry." 15 minute fic. Pretty much canon.
“Katiya.”
She didn’t stop walking away. “What, Father?”
“Damnit – ” He jogged a little to catch up with her. “ I just wanted to say… thank you. For supporting your brother.”
She snorted. “I’m not doing it for you.”
“Nevertheless… I’m glad your distaste for me hasn’t strained your relationship with him.”
Katiya almost rolled her eyes, but didn’t quite. “Noted. I’ll see you later.”
“Katiya…”
“Yeah?”
Nicolas grabbed her arm. “Can we talk?”
She stopped walking but pulled her arm away. “About what? What on earth do we have left to say to each other?”
“I think you’re still behaving very childishly,” Nicolas said, lower. “It isn’t as if we can’t be civil.”
“I’m very glad you think so,” she replied, cool. She could see him struggling to find the words to say, but she didn’t feel any remorse. It wasn’t as if he was going to reach out to her. He was just trying to keep up appearances. For Michalai’s sake. Both of them knew it. “For awhile I was considering just pretending you didn’t exist, but I thought that might get awkward for Mother and Michalai.”
He set his jaw, looking very much like his own mother for a moment. “You are... the most infuriating young woman.”
“Well, at least you can dislike me in my own right, now, and not just for Mom’s sake.” She turned to resume her path back home.
“You know it isn’t that simple,” he said, following her.
“Isn’t it? You hate my mother, so you can’t see me without seeing half of her. You’re almost obsessed with Michalai’s mother, though I don’t really want to get into the chicken and egg of that.” She turned on him. “Well, guess what, Father. At least you got to know your children while they’re still children, which is more than Aunt Stella got to do. At least both your parents love you, which is more than Michalai or Daniel or Yuri or me can really claim, right at the moment.”
He hesitated. “Katiya, I…”
“What?”
“I do love you.”
She turned away. “Yeah. Just not enough, right?”
Frustrated, he said, “I am trying. You think this is easy for me?”
Her eyes were squeezed tightly shut, so nothing could escape. Her voice was low and steady. “Then don’t strain yourself, Father. Just help Michalai get his mother back.” And she moved to go.
This time, he didn’t stop her.
