Word Count: 341

Author's Notes: Sorry these have been relatively short and far between - end of term is killing me. But I should be a bit more productive in a week or so.
An awful smell filled the bake house, but he hardly noted it. He simply sat there, cradling her in his arms. It wasn’t that he was numb; no, that wasn’t it at all. He was frighteningly aware of the vivid red blood, starting to dry into rusty brown stains on her throat and the rags she had been wearing – so bright against the dull drabness the dirt had created. The curve of her lip – her lips were still flushed a deep rose. Even under the matted tangles, he could see the gold of her hair try to peek through. In this state, it was still beautiful. The gold no longer had the lustre of a new pocket watch – it was the color of wheat, now, ripened in the sun.
She was still warm. He had learned that bodies take awhile to cool, over the past several months. He had learned a lot of things. He had learned, for example, that witnesses were a luxury not to be afforded. That time had to be bought and paid for.
A low moan escaped his throat. He heard it, but didn’t connect it with himself in any way. He felt her weight against his chest, and if he closed his eyes for a moment, it could be like she was sleeping. Yes, that was it. She was sleeping, and he was home, and their daughter was just in the next room. He put one hand on her hair, stroking it gently, and he could almost feel her shift under his hand, snuggle closer to his warmth. He had never left England. He had never plotted revenge. He had never killed a man.
It wasn’t that he didn’t sense someone come in. But who could it be, that would be more important than what… who… was in his arms? It wasn’t that he didn’t hear him. But what could he have to say that would matter?
It wasn’t that he didn’t feel the razor. It was that there was nothing to do but let it sink in.
