Insane? Why yes, thank you.
Dec. 1st, 2005 09:17 amSo...because I'm not crazy enough already, I've decided to treat you all with a little advent calendar of fanfic. Huzzah! Look for 25 Christmas/holiday related stories, one a day, for the next month. Because I just love you all that much. I'll also culminate with my Sherlock Holmes Christmas story which, although technically fanfiction, is publishable since the characters are *cough* now public domain. Not that I will publish it, mind you...but it's a bit more involved than the other fanfics I'll be posting. And I also wrote it a bit ago, rather than specifically for the advent calendar.
Anyway, to start you off, here's the first one.
Title: I'll Be Home for Christmas
Fandom: X-Men
A/N: For those who know enough about the X-Men to care, it takes place during the early-ish days of Excalibur, right around when Shadowcat started dating Pete Wisdom. Huzzah.
Kurt’s tail swished lazily as he stood at the window, watching the snow fall. He didn’t turn as he heard Kitty come in, but said quietly, “So beautiful, nein? It doesn’t snow that often in London, you know. Much less than in New York.”
She joined him at the window. “Yeah. It was strange, the first time I didn’t have a white Christmas – lake effect meant we were always buried by the stuff by late December.” He could see out of the corner of his eye that she was smiling wistfully as she looked out on the street lamps below them. “But it seems fitting here. Christmas Carol, ghost of Christmas Past, all that jazz.”
He smiled. “Yes, perhaps.” After a moment, he turned to her. “Do you ever miss America?”
The question seemed to take her off guard. “Miss…” She frowned, and looked away from him for a moment. “Yes, sometimes. There are people…and things. But…this is my home now. The team.” She gestured inclusively. “All this.”
“And Pete?”
She chuckled, just a touch bitterly. “And Pete, I suppose. I know you don’t trust him.” Kitty finally met Kurt’s eyes. “And I really appreciate your concern. But people have to make their own choices, eventually.”
Gently, he said, “I know that. Doesn’t mean I don’t want to look out for you.”
She laid her hand on his shoulder. “I appreciate it.” They stood in silence, watching the snow fall for a bit. After a moment, he wrapped his tail around her waist, and she smiled. “Thanks, elf.” She leaned her head on his shoulder. “I’m glad I don’t have to miss you.”
“That’s one of the nicest compliments I’ve ever gotten.” A beat. “Thanks. I’m glad I don’t have to miss you either.”
“You’re welcome.” After a moment more, she reached up to kiss his cheek, nose wrinkling good naturedly at the feel of his fur against her lips. He let her go as she pulled away. “I should get going – it’s snowing harder.”
“So it is. Sure you don’t want me to…”
“No, thanks though. I’ll catch a cab.” She paused at the door and turned back to look at the man lingering by the window. “Merry Christmas, Kurt.”
“Merry Christmas, Katzchen.” He watched he go and prayed that God would grant them both a little merriment. It was sorely missed.
